Astragalus is an attractive perennial legume with spikes of yellow, pea-like flowers, followed by pods in Autumn. It is the root that is harvested in winter, after 4 years and used for medicine. The Chinese often combine this root with Ginseng as a tonic to strengthen the immune system.
Astragalus is useful when used at an immune-stimulant and immunomodulator for people suffering from chronic conditions. I have used Echinacea for a short period of time and then followed up with Astragalus long term with those who have compromised immunity and stay ill for extended periods of time.
Besides being a great immune booster, Astragalus benefits diabetes, a great heart tonic and a treatment for Anaemia. It increases the white blood cell count and aids adrenal function and digestion. While promoting healing, increasing stamina, is provides energy to combat fatigue and prolonged stress.
A wonderful root to add to soups and stews during winter (just be sure to remove before serving).
