Elder Flower is a small tree that produces white flat topped clusters of flowers followed by dark purple berries.
The berries are mostly made into syrup as an antiviral remedy (see recipe).
The flowers are used as a hot tea and is a very popular diaphoretic. It helps to open the pores to sweat out a fever and drive out excess heat from the body. This will often help shorten the duration of the illness. It has the added benefit of helping to clear mucus from the upper respiratory tract.
This process of opening the pores has a benefit for the skin as well, by doing this it gently detoxes the skin. The tea can be used to externally wash red, inflamed skin conditions such as sunburn. It has also been used to clear freckles.
Cold tea has more of a diuretic action. This is the process of removing excess water and fluids from the body. Once the tea is made, using a hot infusion, let it cool down and place in the fridge to further cool before using.
Traditionally, Elderflower is used to treat colds, upper respiratory tract infections and hayfever.
