This herb, whose shoots tend to look like little Christmas trees or horses tails, enjoy growing in damp loamy soil.

It is only the infertile summer fronds of horsetail that have medicinal properties, not the spore-bearing stems. Despite the name, horsetail can make horses and cattle sick if they eat the plant. There is a variety called Great Horsetail that should not be taken internally at all, it is poisonous.

Horsetail is a great conditioner of the skin, hair and nails. It acts as an anti inflammatory, diuretic and is used in the treatment of an enlarged prostrate. It is also known to ease the pain of rheumatism and gout.
