Lemon Balm is closely related to mint, oregano and thyme and has a delicious lemon flavour and aroma.  When it is growing in the garden, it is a joy to take a leaf and crush it to breath in the beautiful, uplifting smell.

Lemon Balm is a gently and effective nerve tonic, useful for tension, general exhaustion, stress, anxiety, grief and mild depression.  It can also be helpful for children with ADHD or nightmares.

As it has carminative properties, Lemon Balm is useful for gas, bloating or any kind of indigestion.  It can help with digestive issues related to tension or stomach distress, it does this by relaxing the stomach and nerves. My daughter contracted the most awful stomach bug, causing terrible spasms of vomiting and diarrhoea.  I made her a tea of chamomile and Lemon Balm, to be slowly sipped.  It gently calmed the spasms and allowed her to rest I order to fight it off.  Please note that, for a tummy bug, hot or cold tea should never be taken as it can further cause the stomach to react with spasms.  Herbal tea is a great option for tummy bugs as at the same time as getting medicine, you are replenishing lost fluids.

Lemon Balm is an antispasmodic that is helpful for tension headaches, muscle tension and menstrual cramps.

Lemon Balm has a tonic effect on the heart, especially where tension is part of the underlying cause of the condition.

Have a look at our recipe for sun tea, Lemon Balm is featured and is perfect for this purpose.  Lemon Balm can also be taken as a tincture.

Lemon Balm is very safe for adults and children alike but those with hypothyroidism should avoid large doses.
