What we use for medicine is not the same as what we eat for breakfast, although they both come from the same plant. It is also not processed like oatmeal but rather the plant in its natural state.
The part of the plant that is used would be the stalk, which we call Oat straw. This is made into a wonderful tea.
Oats bring the nervous system back into balance, they nourish and feed the nervous system, especially when nerves are frayed due to overwork and exhaustion. The nutrients repair the system due to the high calcium content. In addition to the calcium, Oats are also high in the following nutrients:
- Protein
- Vitamins A, B complex, C, E and K
- Minerals include iron, potassium, magnesium, chromium, selenium, manganese, zinc and silica
These nutrients support bone health and would help those with weak bones. They are also good for hair, teeth, nails and skin. Topically the tea can be used as a compress for itchy skin conditions.
The tea should be made from a long decoction (boil for 40 minutes on the stove top).
For best results, drink Oat Straw tea over a long period of time such as several weeks, up to several years.
This is a very safe herb with no side effects or contraindications.
