Yarrow is found growing along the edges of foot paths and on boundary fences. It is found to be blooming from early summer until the first frost of winter.
It is known to man to be one of the oldest medicinal plants and has always been very highly valued. One of my readers gave me an interesting story, she discovered that it was an absolute must in Alexander The Great’s army. All the soldiers had the powder in their kits for war wounds. How amazing is that!!
It is said to regulate the body’s juices and stimulates the production of fresh blood cells in the bone marrow. It doesn’t only effect the blood but can be used in the treatment of diarrhoea and dysentery. Both the leaves and the flowers are used as medicine and should be collected in the spring.
My personal experience with Yarrow comes from my one daughter who suffered terribly with blood noses, especially when she had a cold or flu. Grinding up this herb, I gave her a little of the powder to sniff up the bleeding nostril. After 3 or 4 treatments her nose stopped bleeding every time she sneezed or blew her nose. I now keep a small jar of ground Yarrow in cases of a bad cut, it literally stops the bleeding instantly!
This is definitely a herb that I would keep in the First Aid Kit!!
