Herbs have far fewer, far less severe side effects and are a safer alternative, however safety precautions should still be followed.
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding is always a concern when taking herbal medication, a health care provider, doctor or pharmacist should always be consulted beforehand especially if on any pharmaceutical.
- There may be a very rare hypersensitivity or allergic reaction, discontinue use immediately if this is the case.
- The very old, young or thin should start on a smaller dose and gradually increase.
- Herbs may increase the effect on certain pharmaceuticals. Eg Red Clover thins blood slightly but you would not want to take it with blood thinning medication like Warfarin. St John’s Wort causes the liver to break down the pharmaceutical faster making them less effective. St John’s Wort for this reason should not be taken if on oral contraception.
