It’s in my blood!  I cannot imagine not growing my own organic produce, preparing and using herbal medicines, caring for my body or cleaning my house with chemicals

Growing up in England, vegetable and herb gardens were the norm, and even backyard chickens were not considered an oddity.  Getting sick with colds, upset tummies, headaches, fevers and aches and pains, meant a herbal concoction to drink, and possibly to bath in. Cuts, scrapes and burns were treated with a poultice or compress.  We visited the doctor for more serious illnesses, such as chicken pox or bronchitis, but the symptoms were treated with herbal remedies.  The perfect combination of conventional and traditional medicines.

In 1997 I moved to USA and studied Herbal Medicine, increasing my understanding and knowledge of the actions and properties of herbs and remedies. When I returned to South Africa I opened Barefoot Herbs, treating patients, running workshops and teaching. I loved it, but, unfortunately, a natural lifestyle wasn’t so popular back then, and I had to go back into a more financially viable career.

Last year I listened to my soul and took the plunge. I believe my purpose in this lifetime is to teach others how to be more self-sustainable, and responsible for their health and well-being.  I sold my catering business to concentrate 100% on Barefoot Life. Now I am writing down-loadable books, on-line courses, presenting workshops and talks, as well as selling seeds and products.

It is easy to grow vegetables, prepare vegetarian meals, and make natural remedies.   In a patch of ground 2m x 2m, you can grow an abundance of vegetables and herbs, and medicinal remedies are easily made in your kitchen, with no special equipment.  All you need is a bit of enthusiasm, some determination, a sense of humour, and maybe a glass of wine!  And then, you can kick off your shoes and get into the garden.
